Also called Smart materials, photochromic pigments change colour according to different lighting conditions. They are often colourless in a subdued light but when sunlight or ultraviolet radiation is applied the molecular structure of the photochromic material changes and produces a different colour and can be manufactured to change back to their original colour (reversible) or remain in their changed state (irreversible).
